Summary

Day 2 of Danka experiencing the K1 on the Thames in mild cloudy weather
Comment by @JonnyC on Monday 30 August 2021
Enthused by her positive experience the previous day, there was no waiting for crowds to clear (not that the crowds gathered particularly on the BH Monday), but our compressed timelines for the day limited our water time slightly. We agreed to head upstream to focus on honing some skills, DK practicing her paddling techniques, and JC challenging himself to leave the skeg up and refine his craft handling.

Arrival at St. John's Lock was greeted by one of the other types of keeper who said we were welcome in if we could show our licenses. A flash of a 2017 and 2020 card from the distance of the water seemed to suffice, however, whilst transiting the lock, the overheard conversation of the keeper and the boat in front of us tipped us off to the fact that an EA police boat was running a checkpoint near the upstream Marina. Needless to say, we took a break the upstream end of the lock to pop spraydecks and find the appropriately dated license, and for DK to take the plunge (pun excused) and buy in to the On The Water scheme. Of course, by the time we were distracted by these few things, our progress upstream was limited (indeed too limited to cross the EA checkpoint), and we started our return leg.

The temptation for another fuel stop at the Trout got the better of us, leaving us an hour behind plans when arriving back at Cheese Wharf for a super fast load, drive home and unload, just in time for JC's (rather painful) kickboxing session.
